The Honorable Michael F. McHugh


The Honorable Michael F. McHugh, age 47, died suddenly at Elkins Park Hospital on Saturday, February 28, 2004.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Judge McHugh was a resident of Elkins Park, PA for the past seven years. He formerly resided in the Oak Lane section of Philadelphia for many years.

Michael graduated from LaSalle University, Class of 1978, with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. He worked as an agent for Prudential Insurance Company for 20 years. While working full time and raising six children, he attended Widener University and obtained his law degree in 1996. Together with his wife Betty, he established the practice of McHugh and McHugh Attorneys at Law in 1998 with offices in Elkins Park and Philadelphia. After a successful campaign in November 2003, he was elected District Justice in Jenkintown and Cheltenham.

Judge McHugh devoted much of his time and talent to his church and community. He participated as a member of the Parish Council, lector, and Eucharistic Minister at St. James Roman Catholic Church. Mike was also a member of the Breton Society in Philadelphia and also a past president of the Olney Athletic Association. He taught Business Law at Manor Junior College and was a referee in the Old York Road Athletic Association. For several years he was a state licensed referee for the World Wrestling Federation. Judge McHugh was also an avid stamp collector. But most of all, he was a devoted husband of Elizabeth McHugh, Esq., and a great family man to his six children, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

His wife, Elizabeth A. McHugh, his six children, Michael Francis, Jr., Patrick S., Kathleen Bridget, Elizabeth Erin, Colleen Clare, and Thomas Joseph survive Mike. He was the son of the late James J. Sr. and Mary J. Quinn McHugh, brother of the late Patricia A. McHugh, and is survived by his other siblings, James Jr., Mary Gallagher, Kathleen, and Christopher and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewings both Wednesday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 PM and Thursday morning from 9:00 AM until his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. James Church, 8320 Brookside Rd. Elkins Park, PA 19027. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Sacred Heart Home for incurable cancer, 1315 W. Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19140-2014.
