Edward Michael Sweeney, formerly of Cranford, NJ and recently of Washington Crossing, PA, passed away on December 27, 2013 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with his family by his side. He was 67.

Born in Bayonne, NJ, he was a son of the late Michael and Mary Sweeney, and brother to the late Beatrice Campbell.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Strunk Curtier Sweeney.

Ed was a 1964 graduate of Marist High School in Bayonne, NJ, and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ. After college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served our Country overseas during Vietnam, attaining the rank of Captain. Upon being honorably discharged from service, Ed returned home and began his career in banking, and was an underwriter for several financial institutions until his retirement.

Ed married Joanne Dietz Sweeney in 1975, and enjoyed 29 years of marriage and raising their children together in Cranford until her passing in 2004. Soon after, Ed met his future second wife Ruth, and they were married on September 10, 2011 in St. George’s Church in Titusville, NJ.

Ed was an athlete, and especially enjoyed running. In his younger years, he used this skill to earn a scholarship to college. During his lifetime he enjoyed going to the gym, and was often seen at the Cranford Fitness Center. Ed was an active life member of the Cranford VFW Post 335.

He was Irish through and through, and enjoyed anything that celebrated his heritage, especially music. He was a guitar player and singer of traditional Irish songs and played occasionally with the Tipsy Rover Band of Cranford.

Ed was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, and will be truly missed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Mary Ellen Sweeney of Los Angeles, CA, Edward Michael Sweeney, Jr. of Tahiti, Elizabeth A. Sweeney of Baltimore, MD, Catherine J. Sweeney of New York, NY, and his step children Diana White and her husband William of Biglerville, PA and Kevin S. To the family of Edward Sweeney;
It seems so unfair that death should have the power to take away someone you love. And when it happens the thought of never again being able to talk to, laugh with or hold your husband & father can be most difficult to bear. The Bible however holds out a wonderful hope. The scriptures indicate that it is possible to be reunited with Edward in the near future right here on earth under peaceful conditions. At that time humans will have the prospect of enjoying perfect health and they will never have to die again. Jesus said in John 5:21,28,29 "Just as the father raises the dead up and makes them alive, so the Son also makes those alive whom he wants to. Do not marvel at this because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear Jesus voice and come out." Jesus promised that millions now passed will live again on this earth and have the prospect of remaining on it forever under peaceful, paradisiac conditions (John 3:16, 17:3 & Psalm 37:29). Until that day arrives remember God who is the hearer of prayer can equip you with the power beyond what is normal to go from one day to the next (2 Corinthians 4:7, Psalm 65:2). Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

Dear Ruth, Maryellen, Ed, Liz & Catherine,
Ed was a truly great guy and though he's left us physically, when the wind blows he's there, when you feel the warmth of the sun he's there and when it rains he's there to wash away the pain. You are in our prayers.
