Robert J. Sullivan

Robert J. Sullivan, of Southampton, died peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loving family on Monday, December 26, 2016. He was 86.

He was the beloved husband of 61 years to Betty Rubincam Sullivan.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Robert was the son of the late Joseph A. and Margaret C. Gemmell Sullivan, and father of the late Paul R. Sullivan.

Robert was a proud combat Veteran of the U.S. Army who served as a machine gunner on legendary Pork Chop Hill during the Korean Conflict. He worked for many years as a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service before retiring in 1989 to work on his son Paul’s TastyKake business. He later left TastyKake to work as a delivery driver for 15 years at Advanced Micro Computer Systems, Inc. He worked until the age of 83, and always said that working at Advanced Micro was the best job he ever had.

Robert was a die-hard Philadelphia sports and Notre Dame fan. He was well known, well liked, and respected throughout the community. For example, during his rehabilitation stays at the Artman Lutheran Home, he was reverently referred by his family, staff, and fellow patients alike as “the Mayor of Artman.” His son, Mark, always said that his father was the “George Bailey of Somerton – the richest man in town” (like the Jimmy Stewart character in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”) because he had accumulated so many friends throughout the years.

Anyone who knew Robert could personally attest that he always enjoyed a great laugh. He performed as a stand-up comedian several times at the age of 83, and was invited back one evening to be the headline act. His performances were always well received, and the club owner’s reviews could be summed up in a simple but honest phrase: “He Rocked It!!”

In his leisure, he enjoyed spending time with his family and helping them to create memories that will always be cherished in their hearts. Robert will be greatly missed but will always be remembered by everyone whose life he has touched and made shine with a smile or a chuckle.

In addition to his beloved wife Betty, Robert is survived by his loving and devoted children: Mark A. Sullivan, Esq., Robert J. Sullivan and his wife Deborah, Linda J. Dick and her husband William, Jeanne M. Sutton and her husband Thomas. He is also survived by his 8 dear grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from 8:30am until his Funeral Service 10:15am in the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.) Richboro, PA 18954. Interment will follow with Military Funeral Honors in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
