Gisela Falkenberg

Gisela H. Falkenberg (Gothe), 94 years old of Newtown Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on February 15, 2024.

She was born to the late Heinrich Gothe and Hilda Scholemann in Muenster, Germany in 1929, the oldest of six children and the only daughter.  She grew up in Germany during a challenging time, helping take care of her five younger brothers throughout the difficult years of World War II.  She was an excellent student and talented athlete, and eventually attended medical school, where she met her future husband Jorg and earned her medical doctorate degree.  Thereafter, she completed additional residency training to become a Board-certified anesthesiologist.  Gisela started her family in Germany, then emigrated to the United States in 1964, where she raised six children while continuing to work as a physician until she retired in 1986 from the Robert Packer Hospital / Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, PA.  She and Jorg moved to Newtown in 2019 to be closer to their children.

Her life was marked by love of God and family. Gisela also loved the outdoors, especially gardening, hiking, cross-country skiing, and riding her horse Pete.  She was a devoted Catholic, active in the church, the local parochial school, and the pro-life movement where she advocated strongly for respect of all human life.  She was also known within the family for her delicious home-made jams and jellies, which she made after picking wild berries and fruits.

She will be remembered for her dedication to her family and the causes that were important to her. Throughout her life, she was drawn to opportunities to serve. She served in a mission in East Germany, volunteered in Haiti, and provided experiences for Fresh Air Kids from underserved urban communities. Her humility, courage and determination in overcoming obstacles, strong spirituality and faith in God, and optimism will continue to be an inspiration to all who knew her.

Gisela is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, K. Jorg Falkenberg; six loving children, Inge Blythe and her husband Paul, Thomas Falkenberg and his wife Heather, Martin Falkenberg and his wife Anete, Ulrike Falkenberg and her husband Adolfo, Barb Lupica and her husband John and Christian Falkenberg and his wife Maria; sixteen wonderful grandchildren, Christian and his wife Kylie, Max, Lauren, Gina and her husband Bryan, Alexandra, Isabella, Erika and her husband Josh, Jane, Nicholas, Olivia, Lukas, Kate, Sophia, Carter, Anabella, Luc; one great grandchild, Iley; brother, Paul Gothe and predeceased brothers, Fried Gothe, Meinolf Gothe, Hansi Gothe and Alois Gothe, their children and grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to Gisela’s funeral mass on April 5, 2024 at 10:30 am at St. Ignatius of Antioch Church, 999 Reading Avenue, Yardley, PA, followed by a committal service at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
