Michael Ross Chernick
Michael Ross Chernick died unexpectedly on January 1, 2021. He was 73 years old. He was the beloved husband of Deborah Ann (Lewandowski) Chernick. The couple shared 32 years of marriage.
Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, Michael was the son of the late Jack and Norma (Wiener) Chernick and the brother-in-law of the late Frank Weisz.
Michael received his Ph.D. from Stanford in Operations Research and held an advanced degree in Statistics. He was a Fellow in the American Statistical Association and President of the Southern California Chapter of the ASA. He had published many articles in professional journals and mathematical books. Michael was a lifelong sports fan, especially the New York Yankees. In addition to the ASA he was also a member of ENAR, the IMS, the Bernoulli Society and the Royal Statistical Society. He received the prestigious Jacob Wolfowitz Award for the Outstanding Theoretical Advances Paper of the Year in 1983.
He enjoyed teaching, mentoring, and doing puzzles, particularly Sudoku. He liked playing chess with his sons.
In addition to his wife Deborah, Michael will be greatly missed by his sons, Kenneth Rich, Nicholas A. Chernick and Daniel S. Chernick; his brother Julian (Patricia) Chernick and his sister Irene Weisz. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. In particular, he will be missed by his cousin Nina (David) King.
Funeral services will be held privately, with burial taking place at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
