James S. Bowers

James Sutphen Bowers 92 of Warminster PA and Formerly of Princeton, NJ, Yardley and Newtown, PA died peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

Born in 1928 in Morristown, NJ and raised in Summit, NJ later to live in Ithan, PA and Princeton, NJ for 12 years and the last since 1986 in Yardley, Newtown, and most recently at Ann’s Choice in Warminster, PA.

A graduate of the Phillips Exeter Academy and Cornell University, B.A. Economics, he also earned an MBA at Rutgers, The State University of NJ after serving in the United States Air Force as a 1st Lt. and Staff Transportation Officer at the 1st A.F. Headquarters during the Korean Emergency where with other duties, he drafted for approval the MD plan to move the Headquarters.

He was later employed progressively, from, 1953, in positions at General Motors Overseas Operations ultimately as an Assistant to a General Manager of Non-Vehicle Products where he did the Market Research and Planning for a High-Speed Diesel Plant in Europe along with his regular responsibilities.  In 1961, he moved on to Prudential Insurance Co. of America’s Investment Department to be a Senior Investment Analyst and Industry Specialist involved is some $40,000,000 of industrial loans.  Some years later, he became a Supervising Marketing and Planning Specialist at Mack Trucks Inc.  Then, because of the company’s sale, he became Senior Management Consultant at price Waterhouse concentrating in Business Planning and “fix-ups.”  From there, through client assignment, in 1968, he became an Assistant VP of Commercial Marketing at Philadelphia National bank (Wells Fargo) initiating and successfully managing a totally new bank-wide effort to improve penetration in the commercial (business) banking market.  Mr. Bowers went on to be a Sr. Vice President, Branch Operations at Anchor Savings Bank in New York City where, with other duties, he developed a long range budgeting system for the bank.  And then, after several years for development, in 1975, he assumed the position of President and Owner, of NJ Real Estate Investment Co. owning and successfully managing eight different properties.  Still continuing in the position, in 1977, he became an Assistant Professor of Business at Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ and then in 1984, Director of Corporate Programs at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ.  In 1988 he became Director of Consulting at the Management Development Institute of a large regional Accounting and Consulting specializing in business planning and successful “turn-around” situations; he successfully “saved” a large savings bank from ‘default”.  Also, in that position, he devised and managed the Presidents’ Council for CEOS’s and Senior Executives of Large Company’s and, then, separately for small companies as well.  He retired from that firm in 1997.

Mr. Bowers was an active Rotarian for over 30 years as a member of the Brooklyn Club and then a member of and Director of Vocational (Career Education) Service of the Princeton Club.  Additionally, he became the same for District #7510 (45 Clubs) in New Jersey earning the District’s Distinguished Vocational Service Award in 2003 and 2008 and three Paul Harris Awards, thought to be Rotary International’s highest awards; he also was a member and later Chairman of the District’s Ambassadorial Scholarship program until 2004.  Mr. Bowers was a member and Deacon of the Munn Avenue Presbyterian Church, East Orange, NJ and the same for the Nassau Presbyterian Church, Princeton, NJ, and the Morrisville Presbyterian Church, Morrisville, PAS where he also became an Elder.  More recently in 2005, he became a member and Elder of the Newtown Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Bowers was also a former Trustee and Treasurer of the United Way of Princeton for over 8 years, a Director of Boy Scout Troop #43 in Princeton, and a Director of the Princeton Chamber of Commerce for over 12 years from which he received honors.

More recently at Ann’s Choice where he and his wife lived for 13 years, Jim was for 7 years an active member of the Finance Committee and successfully made a recommendation regarding ways to substantially increase “available” cash flow based on his experiences at Philadelphia National Bank (Wells Fargo).  He was for years a member of the Steering Committee of the Constitution Club as well as a member of the Scholarship Committee and Veteran’s Club.

He leaves his wife Nancy of 52 years and two step-children, Carl and David Berntsen of California.

Services and Interment will be private.
