Thomas E. Mellon Sr.

Thomas Edward Mellon Sr., a longtime resident of Richboro, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at the Birches at Newtown, surrounded by his family. He was 96 years old.

Thomas was the beloved husband of the late Honor Katherine McCormick Mellon. The couple had shared 62 years of marriage and raised their family in Delaware County. They lived in Richboro for many years before Honor’s death in 2008.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Thomas was the son of the late John W and Martha Cullen Mellon. He is the father of the late Thomas E Mellon Jr; and the brother of the late John Mellon, Peter Mellon, Rose Kollock, Martha Travis, Frances Coyle and Margaret Bernocco.

Tom loved life and he lived it long and well.  He was a peaceful man who loved to laugh and greeted everyone with a radiant smile and a kind word.  He served his country faithfully during World War II, even enlisting early to do his duty.  When he returned home, he built a large family with Honor, the love of his life, and remained dedicated to their family with a fierce loyalty and stoic determination that emphasized his Irish heritage and Catholic values.  He was always available for a home improvement project and loved nothing more than entertaining everyone on holidays.

Tom was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, sometimes even sacrificing for himself to make sure that the family never went without.  He was generally quiet, but when he spoke his words carried an air of authority that commanded respect.  He enjoyed taking walks and most nights could be seen enjoying a bowl of his infamous ice cream.  He loved to make people laugh, saying it was better to laugh than to cry and always pushed people to do their best.  Tom’s can-do attitude and carefree spirit can be summed up with his favorite three words, ‘How ‘bout that?’

Thomas will be greatly missed by his sons and daughters-in-law, Edward J Mellon and Hong Cheng Zhou, Robert J Mellon and Deborah A Romanski, Sara Webster and Marilyn Mellon; and his three sisters, Bernadette Mellon, Julia Affonsa and Mary Devine; his sister-in-law, Mariann McCormick; his grandchildren, Edward M Mellon, Thomas E Mellon III, Sean M. Mellon, Christopher S. Mellon, Ryan S. Mellon, Elizabeth H. Mellon, Henry D. Webster-Mellon, Eric C. Mellon, Lauren K. Mellon, Beth Joyce and Kathleen Berman. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren and was looking forward to the birth of his ninth. He has many loving extended family members that will remember him with fond memories.

Thomas’ funeral services and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, and in Thomas' memory, family and friends are encouraged to make memorial contributions to the Catholic Relief Services, P.O.
