Robert McCandless

Robert McCandless, of Chalfont, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2022, at Doylestown Hospital. He was 80.

He was the beloved husband of Charlotte L. Waetjen McCandless, to whom he was married 58 years.

Born February 23, 1942, in Abington, he was the son of the late John "Jack" and Elizabeth Ford McCandless.

Robert was a second-generation Optician, and the mentor of a third generation Optician, working at Robert McCandless Opticians.  He was proud of his work ethic as he had been in business for over 60 years and worked until he was 80 years old.  Robert loved his John Deere tractor and cutting his lawn.  He loved going to Ocean City, NJ to escape and play in the sand and ride the waves with his family.  He was a much-loved baseball and softball coach to his children and their friends.  Above all, Robert was the beloved patriarch of the family and a proud fan of all of his children’s and grandchildren’s events.  He rarely missed a party and was often the life of that party and loved to tell stories.  Robert served in the US Army for four years as a proud serviceman stationed in Germany.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  He was an Usher at St. Jude Church for many years.

In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his five children: Robert Patrick McCandless (Nancy) of Quakertown, Michael McCandless (Dawn) of Upper Black Eddy, Charlotte McClintock (Scott) of Kintnersville, Stephen McCandless (Cami) of Charlestown, RI, and Lauretta Halderson (Greg) of Chalfont, and son-in-law Bryan Newfield of Perkasie, and his brother Richard McCandless of Florida, and sixteen beloved grandchildren, five great-grandchildren with two more on the way.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Kristen M. Newfield, his sister Joan and brother Jack.

Relatives and friends are invited to join Robert’s family at his visitation on Sunday, June 5, 2022, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 E.
