Ernest L. Steen
Ernest Luther Steen passed away Monday, June 27, 2022, at his home in Holland, Pennsylvania. He was 91.
Born August 30, 1930, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, he was a son of the late Ernest Bennet and Inez Viola (Ingebrigtson) Steen. He was husband of Barbara Joan (Setvedt) Steen, to whom he would be married 50 years this July.
Ernest attained his Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating Summa Cum Laude from University of Minnesota. He went on to earn a Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School, and finally a Master of Arts from Yale Graduate School. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and a Rockefeller Fellow. He also honorably served his country in the United States Army, stationed on active duty in Korea. With his extensive education, he would educate others as a Religious Studies and Philosophy Professor at Hamline University and Wagner College.
Ernest was a lifelong learner with a considerably large book collection and an avid writer who regularly corresponded with family and friends all over the country. He loved listening to classical music and opera, and enjoyed attending live concerts. He was also an active member of God’s Love Lutheran Church, in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where he sang in the adult choir for 31 years with his wife.
Most of all, he cherished his family and was enthusiastically involved in the activities of his sons and grandchildren, including being a long-time active parent at Spirit Swimming. His family treasured him in return, and will miss him deeply.
In addition to his wife, Ernest is survived by: son Brant Setvedt Steen and wife Dasha Marchetti, of Richboro; son Craig Garrett Steen and fiancé Aarthi Manohar, of Holland; brother David Samuel Steen and wife Lorilie; sister Ruth Inez DeFor and husband Kenneth; and grandchildren Maxwell William Steen and Lucas James Marchetti.
Relatives and friends are invited to join Ernest’s family for his visitation on Saturday, August 27, 2022, from 1:00 PM until his 2:00 PM memorial service at Lutheran Church of God’s Love, 791 Newtown Yardley Rd, Newtown, PA 18940. A reception will follow at the church. Interment was privately held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to Yale Divinity School.
