Rachel Ann Martin

Rachel Ann Martin of Huntingdon Valley, PA peacefully passed away on July 18, 2022. She was ninety-seven years old. She was loved by many and lived a very active life.

Rach, as she was also known, was born at home to C. Leon and Estelle Martin in West Goshen Township, PA. Raised on a farm, she attended West Chester High School and then West Chester State Teachers College earning her degree in Education. Later, she earned her Masters of Education at Temple University. Throughout her life, Rachel would add to her education attending summer programs around the country including Columbia and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

She taught at several different schools in eastern Pennsylvania, including Abington and West Chester College. She coached field hockey to several different ages throughout her career. An avid equestrian, she competed at multiple horse shows, including the Devon Horse Show. She also loved to fox hunt in the fields around West Chester and Brandywine.

Her interests and activities were numerous. She played bridge, tennis, and golf. She traveled extensively. She enjoyed her volunteer work with the nuns at Holy Redeemer. She loved opera, antiques, her cats and her large extended family. She was always working on a knitting project and every great niece or nephew received a blanket knit by their great aunt Rach - and she soon became known to them as The Great Rach. Extremely independent, Rach was still driving at age 97.

Rachel is survived by her sister, Mimi Asplundh, her niece, Paige Cumming (Chris), her nephews, Scott Asplundh (Hali), Brent Asplundh (Kelly), Gregg Asplundh (Camy), plus twelve great-nieces and nephews and three great-great nieces and nephews.
