Charles “Fred” Wunnenberg, 82, of Warrington

Charles “call me Fred” Wunnenberg, 82, of Warrington, Pa., died on Saturday evening, Aug. 27, at Doylestown Hospital with his wife, son and daughter by his side.

Fred is remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather whose love for his family was never questioned. He shared 61 years in marriage with Veronica Dowling Wunnenberg. Fred and Ronnie raised three children and have four grandchildren.

Everyone has stories worth sharing, and Fred had plenty – growing up in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia and riding bikes with his brother, Dave, as a child near the historic Water Works, serving in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s, working as a lineman with his buddies at PECO, or tales from travels across the U.S. and Canada.

Fred achieved success as a husband, Dad, friend and neighbor. Humble and kind, he shared his time, words of wisdom and encouragement with his family, was a loyal and committed worker over 32 years with Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) and provided well for his family. He was skilled with his hands, generous and glad to always lend a helping hand whenever needed.

During his days with PECO, he held several positions in Electric Operations and formed strong bonds with his “field” colleagues who became good friends, some like brothers. While he retired in 1994, Fred had plenty of “lineman” stories to share for years afterward about his crew mates, technical challenges, mutual assistance trips and unusual assignments – with a dose of his dry wit.

Along with his brother-in-law Bill Dowling, Fred felt blessed to own a vacation home on Sand Lake near the Rideau Canal in Ontario, Canada, and he and Ronnie enjoyed many days there along the lake, boating with family and friends, while spinning tales of fishing adventures. Fred and Ronny also created many fond memories during travel from Florida to Alaska and many picturesque areas across Canada. After selling the home in Ontario, he still cherished being close to the water during visits to the Jersey shore with his son, Chuck, and the Delaware beach with his daughter, Ann. More recently, he liked watching the deer, fox, hummingbirds and wildlife outside his windows.

Born in Perth Amboy, NJ, Fred was a son of the late Charles F. and Emily (Rassmussen) Wunnenberg. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan C. Critchfield of Hatfield, Pa., who passed away in June 2021, and his brother, David Wunnenberg, of Manahawkin, N.J.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his son, Charles W. (Chuck) Wunnenberg, and his wife, Jennifer, of Perkasie; his daughter Ann and son-in-law Michael Wood, of Warrington; and his sister-in-law Joan Wunnenberg, of Manahawkin, NJ. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Andrew and Brian Wunnenberg and Joshua and Benjamin Wood.

His family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, September 1, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 856 Euclid Ave., Warrington, PA 18976. His interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3301 W. Cheltenham Ave, Cheltenham, Pa., 19150.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
