Mary Jane Callahan (McMahon)

Mary Jane Callahan of Warminster died peacefully on Friday, September 23, 2022. She was 87.

Mary Jane was the wife of the late James M. Callahan, Jr., to whom she was married for 62 years.  They raised their four children in Churchville and Richboro.  Mary Jane enjoyed being active in her community and, among other endeavors, was a past president of both the Southampton Chapter of the American Association of University Women and the Northampton Women’s Club.  As president of the latter organization in 1967 - 68, she was instrumental in lobbying the Township Supervisors to open a township library in the old Nike Base.  She worked to raise funds for the library and advocated for the formation of a Library Board.  The Free Library of Northampton Township has since celebrated more than 50 years and has moved on from its original home at the Nike site.  She was a parishioner at St. Vincent de Paul Church and had served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Constantly curious, Mary Jane was a lifelong learner. She especially loved history.  She was an avid reader of all genres but really enjoyed a good suspense.  She was also always ready to play cards and she loved to dance.  She loved many special dogs throughout her life, most recently doting on a dog named Dobby.

Born in Philadelphia, Mary Jane attended Little Flower High School.  She earned her bachelor’s degree from D’Youville University in Buffalo, New York.  Prior to the birth of her children, Mary Jane taught middle school in the Philadelphia School District.  She returned to teaching at St. Martha’s in Philadelphia and then, until her retirement, at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Southampton.

Mary Jane is survived by her children Sheila Callahan (Peter Keenan), Jim Callahan (Cindy), John Callahan (Shannon), and Jason Callahan (Donna Mannarino).  She is also survived by her grandchildren Aislinn, Owen, Kayla, Kellie, Olivia, John Patrick, and Rose.  In addition to her husband James, she is preceded in death by parents Joseph and Frances McMahon and sister Joan Hedges.

Mary Jane’s family will receive friends on Friday, September 30, 2022, from 10:00 AM until her Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, Chapel of St. Louise de Marillac at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 654 Hatboro Road, Richboro, PA 18954. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF.org/donate).
