Frederica Gaffney

Frederica (Rickie) Gaffney left this beautiful world peacefully in her sleep at home in Newtown, Pennsylvania on January 6, 2023. She was born to Paul and Pip Gaffney at Sturdy Memorial hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts on October 6, 1948.  She was initially reared in Attleboro, but moved with her family to Kettering, Ohio in 1960.  She graduated from Fairmont High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Radio and Television from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, graduating in 1970.

She had an extraordinary career in television production starting with internships in Pittsburgh, then entry assignments in Baltimore and with the Michael Douglas Show in Philadelphia.  She went on in ever-increasingly responsible production roles in Hollywood and Manhattan.  Along the way she served on Capitol Hill as press aide to the U.S. Senator from Maryland, J. Glenn Beall.  Among her achievements is more than a decade as a producer and senior producer for ABC’s Good Morning America. She was awarded two Emmy’s for productions while with GMA.   For her entire career she was a role model and eager mentor to many men and women starting out in television production.

She left Manhattan near the end of her full-time career to live beside her beloved Delaware River in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania where she continued to consult on new television productions.

In the last few years, she resettled in the center of Newtown to enjoy its historic charm and conveniences.

Rickie was predeceased by her father, Paul G. Gaffney (2008) and mother, Elfrieda (Pip) Gaffney (2017) and brother, Shawn Gaffney (1963). She is survived by her older brother, Paul G. Gaffney II of Columbia, SC and niece Crista Puckett and grand-niece Clara Puckett of Vienna, VA.

Final services are private with her family. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Feeding America (give.feedingamerica.org).
