Dr. Hak Ryun Kim

Dr. Hak (H.) Ryun Kim, of Yardley, PA passed away on Monday, January 9, 2023. He was 89. He was the beloved husband of Yun Hee Kim (Jee) for 63 years.  Born in Incheon, South Korea, he was the son of the late Chang Kun Kim and Han Moon Kim (Cho).

The eldest of seven children, Dr. H. Ryun Kim was a dedicated and hard-working person, graduating from Seoul National University College of Medicine and as a Medical Officer in the Korean Navy.  While in the Navy he had several opportunities to spend time in the United States for medical training and internships.  As a result of these visits, he decided to move to Bucks County, Pennsylvania where his family joined him in 1966.  In 1971 he started working with Dr. H. Blake Hayman in the Ob-Gyn field at Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol, PA; then at St. Mary Hospital in Langhorne, PA, delivering the hospital’s first baby in March 1973. In 1984, he opened his own practice at St. Mary Hospital’s Medical Building.  He supported the Franciscan Sisters who established Mother Bachmann Maternity Center in the 1990’s.  Dr. H. Ryun continued to find joy in his field for another two decades.

Dr. H. Ryun Kim was devoted to his Christian faith and had stories to tell, stating how the Lord’s Prayer saved him during the Korean War.  He was an Elder at Bucks County Presbyterian Church.  In 1981, he was one of the founding members and an Elder of Yuong Sang Presbyterian Church that purchased land and built its own church in Horsham, PA.

In the years to come, Dr. H. Ryun Kim went on missions with the church as a member of the medical team in the Canary Islands, Saipan and other locations.

He once said, if he wasn’t going to be a physician, he would’ve been a history professor.  In his free time, he happily gave lectures on history at his church; to the local police; to continuing education classes and to anyone who would listen.  Besides his passion for medicine and history, he loved classical music and the arts.

It was love at first sight when he met his wife, Yun Hee, at a church in Incheon where he was the choir conductor.  Five years passed before getting engaged and another before marrying.  She was his partner and pillar of strength of the family.

Dr. H. Ryun Kim is survived by his wife, his children: Annae Kim Paynter and Jamie Paynter, Andrew Kim and Kasia Kim, and Unmee Kim; his grandchildren: Ryan Paynter, Lili and Olivia Kim; his brothers: Hak-Joon, Hak-Un, Hak-Cheon and Hak-Chin; and his sister, Chong-Hui Seo.  Dr. H. Ryun Kim was predeceased by his sister Young-Hee Oh.

Dr. H. Ryun Kim’s family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd.
