John J. Dixon Esq.

John J. Dixon, Esq. proud veteran of the United States Navy died at Jefferson Abington Hospital with his family by his side at age 96 on Thursday, January 26, 2023. John was the beloved husband of 72 years to Betty Jane (Webb) Dixon. Born in Philadelphia in 1926, John was the son of the late John Charles and Gertrude (Hart) Dixon.

In addition to his loving wife Betty, John is survived by his devoted children: Mark Dixon of Hatboro, Debra DeCarlo of Warminster, Barbara Dixon and her husband Addison Parker of Waco, KY, Sharon Dixon of Pottstown, Carolyn Kramer and her husband Michael of Kingwood, TX, and Paul Dixon of Quakertown. He was also the loving father of the late Matthew Dixon, and father-in-law to the late Dennis DeCarlo. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and was awaiting the birth of an eleventh great grandchild.

John grew up with a single parent, his father John C. Dixon who was a Philadelphia police officer. As a youth John’s immediate family might have been small, but he had the benefit of a large extended family in the Tacony section of Philadelphia where he spent his early years.

He was a graduate of North Catholic High School in Philadelphia, LaSalle College, and Temple University Law School. As a teen he joined the United States Merchant Marine and then the U. S. Navy where he served as an officer during the Korean war in the 1950s.

He attended Temple University Law School in the evening while working full-time to support his growing family. After earning his law degree, he joined the federal government’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) where he specialized in real estate appraisal. He also pursued a part-time private law practice dealing in family estate law and real estate transactions. During the years he lived in Philadelphia, he was a member of the West Oak Lane Lions Club where he served as President.

In 1969, John and Betty moved their seven children from the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia to Warminster, Bucks County, where they lived for 45 years. For the last eight years, John and Betty were residents of Ann’s Choice Senior Living in Warminster, PA.

For the majority of his adult life, John was a devoted exercise enthusiast. When he worked at HUD, his office was in center city Philadelphia, and every lunch hour he’d walk across the width of downtown to get from his office in the Widener Building to the Central Philadelphia YMCA. After walking to the Y, he’d squeeze in an hour’s workout and then hike back to the office. His exercise regimen also included racking up several thousand miles swimming in lap pools. When asked how he kept track of distance during his swimming workouts, he described a complicated series of different swimming strokes that helped keep track of the progress of his swims.

Both John and Betty never missed a game played by a Philly sports team, especially the Phillies and the Eagles. He was handy with tools and loved to build and fix things. For example, with the help of his son-in-law Denny DeCarlo he built a two-story, two-car garage addition to the family home in Warminster.

After they retired, John and Betty became ardent travelers. They took cruises and visited Alaska, Europe, and Japan. They also loved to hit the road in their RV which they used to visit all of the lower 48 U.S. states.

Grandchildren include: Shawn (Jennifer) DeCarlo, Kevin (Kristi) DeCarlo, Nick (Kiel) DeCarlo, Laura (Joe) Martin (nee Parker), Geoff (Meg) Parker, Meghan (Sean) Hipley (nee Kramer), Cait Kramer, Thomas Kramer, Emily Dixon and Luke Dixon.  Great-grandchildren include: Jonah, Logan, Carter, and Oliver DeCarlo; Jude, Clive, Seth, and Oak Martin; and Hazel and Clara Parker.

John’s family will receive friends on Thursday, February 9, 2023 from 8:30am until his Funeral Service 9:30AM in the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Road (at Holland Road) Richboro, PA 18954.  His interment with Military Funeral Honors will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown.
