John P. Norum

John P. Norum passed away in Montgomery County, PA on Sunday, January 29, 2023. He was 82 years old. John was the beloved husband of the late Mary Jo Barnstead Norum.

Born in the Bronx, NY, John was the son of the late Ralph Kenneth and Ellen Keane Norum.

At his passing, John was one week shy of his 83rd or 37th birthday.  He had selected to start counting down once he retired in 2000 and would continue to remind his family of this on each birthday.  His almost 83 years of life were full of many experiences including being stationed in Korea during his time in the Army, spending some of “the most peaceful and fulfilling” months of his life attending Maryknoll Seminary, traveling Europe in a Volkswagen van, watching, recording, and cataloging hundreds ~possibly thousands~ of his favorite movies, and spending decades of joyful summers eating lobster and lake swimming in Maine.

Although he eventually moved out of the city, John always remained a true New Yorker at heart.  He was passionate about his career of over 25 years with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, much of it in the World Trade Center, and continued with it even after he moved to Bucks County, PA and had over an hour and a half commute.  Along with his wife, he could often be found in a Broadway theater enjoying a musical, and he never stopped cheering for his favorite Mets, Jets and Knicks.  His excitement for a great game will live on with his son and grandsons.

Perhaps most noteworthy is the amazing legacy John shared with his wife, Jo, by providing care and advocacy for more than a dozen foster children.  Their home and hearts were filled with the sound of the laughter of the many children that they cared for and loved.

John will be missed tremendously by his children, Amanda Yoder and her husband Allen of Chalfont, Helen Norum and her fiancé Andrew Plaisted of Doylestown, Patrick Norum of New Britain; his grandchildren, Nathan and Zachary Yoder; his brother, Daniel Norum and many nieces and nephews.  John was predeceased by his brothers, James Norum and Thomas Norum.

Relatives and friends may greet John’s family on Friday, February 3, 2023 from 11:00am until the start of his Funeral Service at 12:00pm at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 East Butler Avenue, New Britain, PA 18901. John’s interment, with military honors, will take place at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, privately on a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rheumatology Research Foundation https://www.rheumresearch.org/donate.
