James P. Ryan

James Patrick Ryan, of Doylestown, PA died suddenly on Sunday, February 19, 2023, while vacationing in San Juan, Puerto Rico with his family. He was 67.

He was the beloved husband of 40 years to Estrella Perea Ryan, a devoted father, and proud grandfather to biological, adopted, and foster children.

Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the loving son of Helen McDevitt Ryan of Doylestown and the late James A. Ryan.

He worked as a stockbroker and financial adviser at Oppenheimer and Company and its predecessor Fahnestock in Doylestown for forty years, and prior to that at the former Bender Mills Chevrolet Dealership. He was a proud alumnus of Franklin and Marshall College and had received a Masters in Business Administration from LaSalle University. He was also among the first graduating classes from Central Bucks East High School, where he was an accomplished swimmer. He was a devout Catholic and an active member in his church communities throughout his life, at St. Jude’s Parish in Chalfont, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Hilltown, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in Doylestown, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a founding member of the Jaycees in Dublin and was active in the Bucks County Council of the Boy Scouts of America for many years.

He got tremendous joy from encouraging his children’s interests and talents in music, athletics, and most of all education. He immensely enjoyed traveling with his wife and children across the United States and internationally, but was most at home vacationing with his family at Ocean City and Wildwood in New Jersey, where he had come in the summers since childhood. He was an avid fan of Philadelphia sports, and of the Phillies and Eagles in particular, and felt a deep connection to the communities of Greater Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania that he passed on to his children.

In addition to his beloved wife and mother, he is survived by loving children, James D. Ryan and his wife Emily Hejazi of New York City, Maura Matthews and her husband Brian of Oreland, Kendra Giardiniere and her husband John of North Wilmington, DE, and Bridgett Markert and her husband Nicholas of Willow Grove, his three sisters Colleen Ryan and her husband William Thorpe of Winchester, MA, Patricia Mullin and her husband James of Springfield, IL, and Beverly Lutes and her husband Gerard of Doylestown, as well as his seven adoring grandchildren, Logan, Cyrus, Cecilia, Gabriel, Leyli, Kingsley, Darya and many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Saturday, March 4, 2023 from 10:00 am until his concelebrated Funeral Mass 12:00 pm in St. Jude Church, 321 West Butler Ave., Chalfont, PA 18914. His interment in St. John Neumann Cemetery will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Jude, at the above address or to The Children’s Justice Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation to support disadvantaged children, particularly those in foster care or undergoing adoption.
