Condolences for Derek Kirner Maier

Emily HermanFriday, September 16th

I don't remember a time in my life I didn't know you. I'm sorry I didn't ever really get to say good bye. In a lot of ways, you were more of a big brother to me than my brothers were. I enjoyed the time we spent in Ireland when the kids were little, just before Bob and I got married, and I'm so glad I got to see you one more time at Sophia's wedding. Rest easy, big brother. Peace.

Oh Derek. The guy who always had the most time
For every niece and nephew. Who made the ground apologize to us if we fell down and skinned a knee. Who took every opportunity to play soccer with us in the hallway. Who took us to ice cream at Dilly’s. He always had time. Always.
I was lucky enough to move to my Grandma’s in 1986 and got to know him as a dad. I was there when Stephen was born. We got to work together later too. A family business that allowed us to work together and know each other as adults. Derek- I will miss your presence so much. You were always, always there. You loved hard and for real and I feel lucky to have been one of your “scrunchers”. I love you Derek. Always.
