One of the many things that made Auntie Emma so endearing was that she could be simultaneously hilarious and tender. She could crack you up with some unexpected comment and then a couple seconds later well up in tears expressing her love or concern. She was so protective of and loving to her little sis, my mom Elena, and constantly encouraged me to take good care of her. I've kepts many of her letters to me, and within the many “God blesses” was always a hopeful wish for me and Henry to have a good life together. And even as her family continued to grow, she would always make each of us feel special with advice or a story just for each of us. I could go on and on about the funny stories I have about her, and one of my favorites: I was making eggs at her apartment on Broad Street, and since I only like egg whites I started tossing out the yokes. I heard her voice from behind: “What are you, a millionaire?!” and proceeded to pull the yokes out of the trash. And her generosity… she lived humbly but she shared whatever she had. She'd put a 5 or 10 in every birthday card, she made sure you never left her house without a bag of food, and she always told me “I love you, dear”. I will miss you, Auntie Emma!!
