Doris "Dorie" O'Donnell (Mack)
Doris A. “Dorie” O’Donnell of Holland died peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. She was 85. Dorie was the loving wife of the late Raymond J. O’Donnell. The two were married 55 years but shared over 58 years of love and life’s adventures.
Born at home in West Philadelphia, Dorie was the daughter of the late Peter and Doris Riches Mack and the sister of the late Peter “Jerry” and Bernard “Bernie” Mack.
Dorie went to Our Mother of Sorrows Elementary School and was a 1956 graduate of St. Hubert High School. During the summers, while attending school, Dorie worked for the Signal Corps and Quartermaster, and during her Junior and Senior years, she worked for Joseph Glennon Company as a secretary. After graduation, she attended classes at Villanova before transferring to Temple University and graduating in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. After graduation, she furthered her education at Penn State University where she would earn her master’s degree in 1966. Dorie began her teaching career, which spanned 45 years with Bristol Township School District. She taught all grades from Kindergarten to Sixth at Jefferson and Fitch Elementary Schools. She also taught CCD and Summer Vacation Bible School with her husband Ray at St. Bede the Venerable Church in Holland, PA.
Dorie loved trips to Wildwood Crest with her brothers and their families, visiting historic sites on the East Coast, and reading about history. She was most interested in early America and loved studying the Bible. Dorie loved working with little kids on Sundays for Children’s Liturgy for many years. She volunteered alongside of her husband Ray for many years as a greeter at the 5:30 Saturday Night Mass at St. Bede. Dorie and Ray felt blessed and privileged to meet many people who became friends as greeters and teachers over the years.
God blessed Dorie enabling her to nurse and take care of her parents. She felt it to be a blessing when she became a “nurse” to her dear husband Ray. His illness drew them closer and it definitely made their love grow more and more. She was thankful to God for that wonderful opportunity.
Family was very important to Dorie, and she played an important role in the lives of many of her fmily members. She often referred to her sisters-in-law as sisters of her own, and she cared greatly for her nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Dorie is survived by her sisters-in-law Eileen Mack of Succusanna, NJ and Donna Mack of Center Valley, PA; her nieces and nephews, Donna Wahl (Christopher) of Pipersville, Kathleen Moelter (Stephen) of Doylestown, Thomas Mack of Holland, Wendy Notari (Dave) of Boyds, MD, Kevin Mack (Maureen) of Long Valley, NJ and Brendon Mack of Succasunna, NJ. She is also survived by her great-nieces and nephews Cayle, Austin and Maddy Mack, Owen and Noah Moelter, Michael, Matthew, and Jessica Wahl, Dylan and Kelsey Mack, and Zachary, Chase, and Cole Notari.
