Joseph T. Scully

Joseph T. Scully, 68, died on May 28, 2022, on his 45th wedding anniversary to his beloved wife, Donna. High school sweethearts, Joe and Donna fully lived their vows with a marriage that grew only stronger and more resilient through the years. As Donna said on the day Joe died, they began and ended their lives together on the same day, a fact that is both heartbreaking and poetic.

Joe, the son of Lawrence and Mary Scully, grew up in Glenside with his brother Thomas and sister Rosemary. He attended Ancillae-Assumpta Academy and LaSalle College High School. He was an avid swimmer and golfer with a healthy disrespect for authority and rules. During his high school career, Joe was perhaps best known for organizing a poker ring and as a founding member of the Bolt Club. Joe was incredibly intelligent, but didn’t always apply himself in the ways his parents approved. He also sometimes got caught.

Joe met Donna at 17 and he knew even before their first date that she would be the woman he would marry. Donna always said no one could make her laugh the way he did.
Joe proposed to Donna on her 21st birthday. They were married the next year and had their first daughter, Megan, the following year. Matthew, Kathleen and Maureen quickly followed and filled their Glenside home with even more laughter and love.

Around this time, Joe became a realtor. He especially loved working with first-time homebuyers and helping people find the place they would ultimately call home. He was fair, honest and knowledgeable, and this is where he used his intelligence for good. He most recently worked at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach.

In 1985, he suffered a spinal cord injury. Donna and the kids were by his side throughout his rehabilitation and recovery. He, and they, were surrounded by the love and support of family and dear friends. The accident made Joe and Donna’s relationship and their family even stronger. While there were obstacles, Joe and the family never let his injury get in the way of family vacations at the shore and trips to the ballpark to see the Phillies play. Joe would often joke that he couldn’t even tie his shoes, but it never got him out of carpool duty.

The front door at the Scully house was always open, sometimes to Joe’s chagrin. But he loved the misfits that congregated on an almost daily basis, often surrounding him to hear his hilarious stories, most of which are not fit to print. Joe had an expansive group of friends, some of whom he knew since his school days, and all of whom were like family.

Joe and Donna spent their final years together at their happy place in Sea Isle City, often surrounded by family and friends.

Joe passed along his love of news and questioning of authority to Megan, who ultimately became a journalist. Matt, a literal rocket scientist, inherited Joe’s smarts. Joe taught Kate that nothing is impossible, giving her the courage to pursue a law degree. Mo got his strength and determination, becoming a fierce advocate for others.
The family grew with spouses Christopher DeBatt, Jennifer Scully and Brian McKenna.

His spirit lives on in his eight grandchildren: Caitlin, Joseph, Samuel, Emma, Liam, Daniel, Elliott and Rory. Some have inherited his looks, others his humor, his determination, his taste in music, his love of baseball and, God help us all, his mischievousness.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet Joe’s family on Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 9:30-11:30 am until his Funeral Mass at 11:30am at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 2316 Fairhill Ave. Glenside.
