Alfred Russell

On Saturday, June 18, 2022, Alfred M Russell, lifelong resident of Churchville passed away at the age of 92. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Alfred Russell was born in Churchville, PA on October 23, 1929, to James and Myrtle Mercer Russell.

Alfred is the husband of Jeanne Smoyer Russell. The couple shared 67 years together. He is survived by his daughters, Diane Taylor (Joseph Taylor), Margret Russell; his two granddaughters, Melissa LeVan (Todd LeVan) and Christine Taylor (Lauren Taylor); and his two great-grandchildren Hayden and Trace LeVan. He is also survived by his brothers Edward, William David and Walter Russell.

In the 1960s, Alfred was an agricultural farmer and grower of vegetables. That love began to blossom as he started to transition from vegetables to perennials and exotic plants. Shortly after, Alfred started construction of several greenhouses on his farmland, which became the beginnings of Russell Gardens Center and Russell Gardens Wholesale. At that time, Alfred’s future son-in-law, Joseph Taylor, started working for him. Alfred taught Joe how to be a farmer, which allowed him to retire and leave his legacy, and the legacy of Russell Gardens Center, to his daughter Diane and son-in-law Joseph; and the wholesale division to the guidance of Alan and Cliff Russell. While Alfred gave up his business, he could not give up his love of plants. He was an integral part of maintaining much of the plant propagation throughout the year. Retirement did have its adventures. Al and Jeanne loved to travel in their RV and see the United States. When their granddaughters were young, they would go on these adventures as well. When great-grandchildren came into the picture, Al and Jeanne spent more time at home, showing the kids the ways of the farm and taking them to local attractions such as the Grange Fair and Fox Chase Farm. Alfred was an avid collector of antiques, such as his love for rose bowls and oil lamps, some of which are on display at the garden center.

Relatives and friends may greet Alfred’s family on Monday, June 27, 2022 from 10:00am, until the time of his funeral service, 11:00am, at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown Richboro Road, at Holland Road, Richboro, PA 18954. His interment, with military honors, will follow at Union Cemetery in Richboro, PA.
