Americo V Vasso

Americo V. Vasso of Langhorne passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at his residence. He was 97. Americo was the beloved husband of Gloria E. (Diehl) Vasso for 74 years.

Born in Philadelphia, Americo was the son of the late Enrico and Anna Vasso. After finishing high school, Mertz, as he was known by most, entered the Army Air Corps where he became a second lieutenant navigator. After the war he entered the business world, eventually owning and operating a successful tool and die machine shop. In 1948 he married his sweetheart, Gloria Diehl, and soon had three children to keep him busy.

Mertz was active in his community, being involved with Little League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion baseball, coaching his son Ron much of that time and including a long run as Pennsylvania State Treasurer for Babe Ruth baseball. He was also an enthusiastic leader in the Kiwanis Club of Lincoln Highway. He was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan and held season tickets for both, going back to the 1950s. His sons both got to enjoy many games with Mom and Dad.

Mertz was also a respectable bowler, and he and Mom both competed in leagues for many years. In later years he took up golf, and even got to enjoy that sport with his daughter Sheryl.

He spent many hours with his children and their children, and we all looked forward to swimming and enjoying cookouts at Grandmom and Grandpop’s house. A lot of memories and photos remind us of hours spent together at their house.

But most important of all, when Mertz was 82, he surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus Christ and accepted His free gift of eternal life. Though Americo, Mertz, Dad, Grandpop, and G-Pop will be greatly missed, we know that we will one day see him again!

Along with his wife, Americo is survived by his children, Ron Vasso and his wife Emma of Levittown, Rick Vasso and his wife Kathy of Langhorne, and Sheryl Vasso of Newtown; grandchildren Lisa McNally and her husband Jesse, Ron Vasso, Lauren Vasso, Nicole Bradley and her husband Joe, Rick Vasso II and his wife Becky, Danielle Dykstra and her husband Randy, and Gloriane Jeffreys and her husband Matthew; great-grandchildren, Riley, Julianna, Harper, Liam, Benton, Tyler, Heather, William, Johnny, and Olivia; sister-in-law, Norma Vasso. He is predeceased by his sisters Josephine Pistilli and Mary Leggieri and his brother Lou Vasso.

Relatives and friends are welcome to gather with Americo’s family on August 15, 2022, for interment at Washington Crossing National Memorial Cemetery, Newtown, at 8:45 AM, followed by a memorial service at Grace Point Church, 592 Washington Crossing Road, Newtown, at 10:30 AM; reception to follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Americo’s memory may be made to Families of World War II Veterans (https://www.familiesww2veterans.org/donate/) and The Wounded Warrior Project (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate).
