Bernice Blyskal (Baran)

Bernice Blyskal, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023.  She was 97 years old.

Bernice was the beloved wife of the late Joseph W. Blyskal.

Bronislawa, her Polish name, was born on May 18, 1926 in Poland to the late Florian and Katarzyna Bobowski Baran.

In her formative years, she learned gardening, farming, and dressmaking, along with basic household skills. She married in 1948, then in 1949 left her homeland to join her husband in America and start a new life, traveling by ship with just her luggage and 9-month-old daughter, Janina “Jeanne”.

Bernice’s early experience as a seamstress was instrumental in starting a long running family business along with her husband. She was also an expert cook and baker of Polish delicacies who enjoyed hosting family gatherings, especially around the holidays. The family also enjoyed frequent road trips to visit relatives, and beach outings in the summertime.

She had a close and nurturing relationship with all of her grandchildren, teaching them basic Polish, how to make cookies and pierogi, and letting them help around the shop and in the garden. She was a devout Catholic and kept a close spiritual connection right to the end.

Bernice is survived by her children, Jeanne Beegle and her husband Jeffrey of Raleigh, NC, and Henya Bonetsky of Boyertown, PA; grandchildren, Jason Beegle, Kim Ply, Christie Karrels, Katrina King; great-grandchildren, Kaden Beegle, Sadi Beegle, Ethan Ply, Ally Ply, Mackenzie Karrels, Thea King, Evelina King, Robert King IV; and brother, Jozef Baran, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Bernice was preceded in death by her siblings, Anna, Maria, Czeslawa, and Wojciech.
