Mildred O'Brien

It is with great sadness that the family of Mildred (Mil, Millie) O’Brien announces her passing on September 4, 2023 after a long illness.  Mildred was the sixth of nine children of the late William J. O’Brien, Sr. and Mildred (Leone) O’Brien.  Mildred is survived by her daughter Maria Gabrys, son-in-law Paul Gabrys, devoted grandsons Paul Jr. and Nicholas, and her canine companion Kemba of Chalfont.  Mil leaves behind brother James O’Brien (Mae), Joseph O’Brien (Linda), and sisters Mary DiCondina (Dominic), Susan Zimmerman, Kathleen Ferguson, and Fran O’Brien.  Siblings William J. O’Brien Jr. Esq. (Lillian) and Dr. Dominic V. O’Brien (Eleanor) preceded Mildred in death.

Mildred was part of the very large and legendary O’Brien family.  She grew up on Stafford Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.  The O’Brien’s were St. Vincent DePaul parishioners and Mil attended elementary school there.  She was a graduate of Little Flower Catholic High School and then followed in her sister Mary’s footsteps by attending Bailey’s Beauty School and becoming a hairdresser at the Continental Salon.  In the early 60’s Mil was known for her musical talent and sang at The Garibaldi in a band with her cousins Lou and Jimmy.  She once had the opportunity to sing with Frankie Beverly and Maze.  Mil’s journey continued with varied careers throughout her life. She was the only female supervisor at Temple University; Physical plant in 1976.  This was followed by a career in the banking industry.  Mildred’s last position, from which she retired, was as a court officer in Philadelphia. She loved every aspect of the position and was well respected and known as one of the best.  In retirement, nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her grandsons and family.

Her family, including 49 nieces and nephews, will miss her meatballs and gravy, chicken cutlets, and her singing at family gatherings.
