Thomas Michael Canning
Thomas Canning, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died peacefully at his home in Churchville on March 28, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was 75 years old.
Tom graduated from Frankford High School, Philadelphia, in 1967. He proudly joined the US Army. After completing his tour of duty, Tom went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in business from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. He pursued a career in banking and finance, spending 23 years at First Pennsylvania Bank (CoreStates) and another 23 years at The Vanguard Group. He retired in 2019.
Tom found joy in the simplest pleasures of life. He often spent his days lending a hand to his children with their home projects, tinkering in the garage while listening to his favorite music, and tending to his yard. He was easy to talk with, as he truly enjoyed chatting, laughing, and a good conversation. Tackling world issues with his friends over morning coffee was a favorite pastime in retirement. Tom cherished time with his family especially at his pool and the beaches of Sea Isle City and Wildwood Crest. He recently enjoyed a dream vacation with his wife, children and grandchildren to Punta Cana.
His grandchildren were the light of his later years, entertaining them with his crazy antics and wit. Tom was a familiar face on the sidelines of their sporting events, always offering cheers and unwavering support. His presence will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, who cherished every moment spent with their beloved “Poppy”. Tom will be remembered for his warm smile, positivity, and genuine joy for life.
Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1948 to the late Charles and Kathleen Canning, Tom is survived by his wife, Patricia Crilley Canning; his children Megan Herman and her husband Tom, Lauren Skowronski and her husband Travis, and Thomas Canning and his wife, Lauren; grandchildren Julia, Addison, Luke, Avery, Ryan, Aubrey and Charlotte.
