Ute-Ursula De (Kittler)

Ute Ursula (Kittler) De of Montgomeryville, PA passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 11, 2022. She was 84. Ute was the loving wife of the late P.K. De for 48 years, the loving mother to Jasmin, Alexa and Markus, and doting grandmother of Willem, Isabella, Tristan and Sebastian.

Born in Nürnberg, Bavaria Germany, Ute was the daughter of the late Friedrich and Anna Kunigunda (Körber) Kittler.  Though her early childhood years were difficult growing up during the National Socialist control of Germany and post-war reconstruction, she and her family remained faithful in their anti-fascism and Lutheran spiritual beliefs.  Ute loved finding and attending churches throughout NJ where sermons were still being delivered in the German language.

Ute completed her “Kindergärtnerin” education in Germany and loved teaching Saturday German language classes at the local Deutsche Sprachschule which her own children dutifully attended through their primary years.  Both of her daughters later taught classes at this non-profit school as an additional activity, in order to be involved with their mother and this wonderful community of German-speakers.

Ute emigrated from Germany to Manhattan, New York City in the early 1960’s where she met P.K. De (PhD) and was married (reception at the Waldorf Astoria).  They moved to central New Jersey in 1971 to provide their three children the ability to grow up in a suburban environment.

Ute loved the United States, its freedoms and opportunities for her and her family.  However, she always enjoyed going back to her “Heimat” in Germany to visit family and friends, and especially periodic vacation travels to Southern Bavaria (Berchtesgaden) and Austria (Salzbuerg).

Ute was one of the most genuine, friendly people you could ever meet.    Her positive outlook on life was evident; her enthusiastic smile was infectious.  She befriended total strangers who were seatmates during her many travels to Germany.  She would regularly check in on elderly neighbors and spent time visiting with them.  When tragedy struck right next door, she offered help.  She loved teaching and caring for children.

She cared deeply about homeless animals, providing a loving home for the adopted dogs that people could no longer maintain themselves, setting about on a campaign to trap every feral cat in her old neighborhood in order to get them spayed or neutered, and continuing to care for many of these cats and kittens until she could find them good homes.  The family pets over the years (Bismarck, Polly, Vicky, Frisky, Moehrle, Maxi) reciprocated her faithful loving companionship.

Ute and her husband relocated from central NJ to Montgomeryville, PA in 2014 as they advanced in age, to be closer to their children, Markus and Jasmin.  After P.K. passed, Ute was lovingly cared for by her eldest daughter Jasmin, who was always by her side.

Ute is survived by her children, Jasmin De of Montgomeryville, PA, Alexa Weigand and her husband David of Montgomery, NJ, and Markus Dey and his wife Lauri of Montgomeryville, PA; grandchildren, Willem and Isabella Weigand, Tristan and Sebastian Dey; sister-in-law, Hildegard Kittler of Eisingen, Germany. She was predeceased by her siblings, Cuno and Ingeborg Kittler.

The family will celebrate Ute’s life privately.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to SAVE, A Friend to Homeless Animals, 1010 Route 601, Skillman, NJ 08558.
