James Aloysius Downey III

James Aloysius Downey III died peacefully on Saturday, September 17, 2022. He was 76 years old.

Jim was the beloved husband of Karen Kelley Downey. The couple shared almost 48 years together.

Born in Baltimore, MD, Jim was the son of the late James Jr. and Katherine Gier Downey.

After graduating from St. Joseph’s University with a BS, Jim enlisted in the Marine Corps and after his Honorable discharge, earned his JD from Temple University School of Law and began his career as a public defender and went on the become Partner at Begley, Carlin & Mandio, LLP.  He practiced law in Bucks County for over 40 years. A widely respected litigator, a significant part of his practice was devoted to arbitration and mediation.  Having been counsel in a successful landmark First Amendment case, Fogarty v. Boles, 121 F 3d 886 (3d Cir. 1997) that is still used as standard today.  He also represented municipalities for the Lower Bucks County Joint Municipal Authority and Tullytown Borough Civil Service Commission. An active contributor to his professional and local communities, Jim was a member of the Pennsylvania and Bucks County Bar Associations, Brehon Law Society, Marine Corps League. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Jim was known for his integrity and lightning quick wit, Jim also served as President of the Newtown Crossing Homeowners Association for 23 years.

In addition to his wife Karen, James will be remembered by his son James Aloysius Downey IV; his sister, Theresa Herr and her husband Bill Herr; and his nieces and nephews, James Herr, Meredith Bookles, David Downey Jr., and Jeannine Greenberg.

Relatives and friends may greet Jim’s family on Wednesday, October 5th, 2022 from 11:00AM, until his Funeral Mass, 12:00 noon at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 81 Swamp Road in Newtown, PA 18940.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bucks County SPCA 1665 Street Rd. Lahaska, PA 18938.
