Jay Franklin Ziegenfuss, Jr. MD

Dr. Jay F. Ziegenfuss, Jr. passed on to his heavenly home on November 16, 2022 at the age of 83. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, physician, friend, and church elder. A Philadelphia-area native, Jay and his wife Joan spent the last 36 years raising their family in Doylestown Pa., where Jay ran his oncology/hematology practice as a widely well-respected physician, known best for the treatment of his oncology patients, and demonstrating a kind of otherworldly love with all those, he came in contact with.

Common descriptors used to describe Jay are loving, kind, sweet, selfless, and committed. A gentle soul, whose loving nature and kindness were a light to all in this often dark and unkind world. Jay’s journey through academia included Germantown Friends, Haverford College, Villanova University, and a medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical School in 1967.

A practicing Oncologist for more than 40 years at Holy Redeemer, Abington, and Doylestown Hospitals, Jay’s bedside manner as a physician as he comforted his patients, has been described as genuine, heartfelt, and life changing. As a Christian, It was one of his greatest hopes for his patients to view and experience the love he had for them, parallel to Christ’s love for himself and others. This was Jay’s light, his purpose. Jay accepted the challenge to live his life in a way in which others might see Christ and His love for all of us. Above being a loving husband, father, and doctor, Jay would want this to be known as his greatest legacy.

Jay had a wonderful sense of humor and could often be heard laughing along with friends and family. He was incredibly dedicated to his wife, sons, extended family, and those who knew him. Jay usually answered calls with “How can I help?” and dedicated his life to Christ-like service to others. Jay also enjoyed cheering on Philadelphia sports teams, reading mystery-novels, and traveling to the beach and England. A true friend to all who knew him, he was always interested in cheering on anyone’s interests. Once his grandchildren were born, he always enjoyed get-togethers that centered around them.

He and Joan took many trips to Europe, especially England, sometimes staying in castles and thatched-roof cottages, often taking their grandson to visit 3 of their granddaughters. These trips were often a highlight for him as many of the mystery-novels he read were set there.

In addition to his wife, Joan, of 55 years Jay leaves behind sons Jay F III [Zach] and wife Min, Timothy of Doylestown, son Peter and wife Sam of Biddenden, Kent, England; grandchildren Andrew, Zoe, Quinn, Esme, Enid, and Niamh; sister-in-law Lois (Dave) Daggy; nieces Laura, Christine, Kara, and nephew David. He was preceded in death by his parents Jay F Sr and Florence Ziegenfuss.

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 4th, at 1:00 pm at Joseph A Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 E. Butler Ave (at Sandy Ridge Rd.) New Britain, PA 18901.  Jay’s family will receive condolences following the service at 2:00pm.
