Alfred S. Green
Alfred S. Green died peacefully on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Ann’s Choice Senior Living Center in Warminster, PA.
Al was married to Lois Luyber of Roebling, NJ. He was a devoted & caring husband throughout their 70+ years of marriage. Their children are Susan (Bruce) Bishop, Sharon (David) Moul, & Laura (Reid) Abel; their grandchildren are Heather Bishop, Travis Bishop & Ransom Redman; & their two great granddaughters are Cailin & Madelyn.
Al was born & raised in the City of Burlington, NJ. He was the only son of the late Alfred Green & Emily (Hopkins) Green & the brother of the late Viola (Green) Weeast Locke.
Al graduated from Burlington High School. During WWII, Al proudly served in the US Navy as an electrician’s mate aboard the USS Cassiopeia. Seeing the ocean on all sides of the ship after climbing the mast to change a light bulb, taught him early in life to do a job correctly the first time.
Al worked for NJ Bell Telephone Company, starting out as a lineman climbing utility poles to install & repair phone lines. He quickly moved “inside” to work in switching offices. As technology changed, he took on more challenging jobs within the company. He enjoyed his later years engineering & planning for new switching offices as areas around NJ developed. He retired from his engineering position at NJ Bell.
When 1st married, Al & Lois lived in an apartment on a dairy farm in Hedding, NJ. They bought their 1st home in Beverly shortly after their 1st daughter was born. Their 2nd home in Cinnaminson was where their daughters primarily grew up. Al was an accomplished amateur carpenter. He finished the home’s walkout basement into a large recreation room where the family spent countless hours snuggled together watching TV. He also built desks, blanket chests & other pieces of furniture. Al was skilled at “DIY” projects such as performing car repairs, landscaping, expertly maintaining the in-ground swimming pool, interior & exterior house painting, & plumbing to name a few.
For decades Al played the trombone with his favorite style of music being “big band”. He played in many community & marching bands throughout the years until his diminished eyesight prevented him from reading music within the past 6 years. Big band LP’s were often played on the living room stereo after dinner & impromptu dancing would take place. Al’s favorite song, “What a Wonderful World”, will always remind family of him.
Al & Lois moved from Cinnaminson to South Jersey for a few years before making a move to the Inverness area in Florida. With summers being so hot, they bought a small getaway cabin in northwestern Georgia. They eventually came to like it so much in the Blue Ridge Mountains that they bought a three-story log home & made Georgia their primary residence. They moved back to NJ for about 6 years after which they moved to Ann’s Choice in Warminster, PA.
As lifelong Methodists, Al & Lois regularly attended church services wherever they have lived. Al gladly served in various volunteer positions such as usher, offering counting committee, church treasurer & building committee.
Al had many different cameras over the years & really enjoyed taking photographs of his girls, while on vacations, & at extended family events. A favorite Cinnaminson weekend pastime would be setting up the screen & projector to watch slides, eat popcorn & reminisce about birthday parties, holidays &/or the family’s 5-week cross-country driving trip.
Al will be most remembered for his unshakable loving devotion to his wife, Lois.
A service with military honors will take place at a future date at the convenience of the family.
