Condolences for Frederica Gaffney

Ernani Di MassaFriday, January 6th

Rickie was an amazing woman and brilliantly talented television producer and writer who always had the innate ability to create TV magic. She and I first met in 1970 at KYW-TV in the original 1619 Walnut Street studios of Group W in Philadelphia. Rickie soon came to work with us on The Mike Douglas Show and moved to Hollywood with the entire ‘Douglas Crew’ in the late 1970’s. Rickie was a dear and beloved friend and guest in our home for every holiday and for many other visits. Rickie honored us in 1980 and took on the role of God Mother to our son Michael as you will see here in a frame grab still from the video from Michael’s 1st Birthday in 1981. Rickey soon even bought a condo right around the corner from us in West Hills, California. Rickey and I reconnected in the early 90’s in Manhattan when she was with the ABC Network and Good Morning America. We had many enjoyable dinners together during those years discussing both old times and our current TV projects. I never had a bad day when I knew that Rickie would be part of it. I will miss her greatly… may God now hold her until we meet again.

I had the great honor of working directly for Rickie at Good Morning America. Rickie always had high expectations and pushed me to uphold what sometimes felt like impossible standards. As a young woman starting a career she could be a very tough boss, but I always knew she had my back and was on my side. Rickie also helped open so many doors, giving me a necessary (but supportive) shove to push myself. Years later I had the opportunity to tell her how much I appreciated all that she did for me and all the important lessons she taught me. She often had more faith in me than I had in myself - and made me better for it.

Rickie was a wholesome, humorous and caring person, who was also an extremely talented television producer. I worked with her at Breakfast Time on FX. There she walked into an environment which I imagine was quite different from the more traditional morning show culture of GMA. She was respected and liked immediately and everyone benefitted from her grounded and uplifting presence. Rickie was a constant creative force and steady guide for a staff full of upstarts and off-the-wall creatives. I liked her a lot :) She will be missed

Dear Rickie,
We are getting a lot of students registered for courses this week at BCCC. It made me think of you and the times we enjoyed talking about world affairs in the geography course. Since we both come from a similar background, we always related easily! Your insights were tremendous and added to the vibrant discussions. I am particularly grateful for the GMA episodes you let me copy to share with future classes. Those world tours that you helped produce are being shared with the next generation, friend. Thank you for blessing us with your light.
